------------------------------------------
France, apart from Bordeaux and Burgundy, the Rhone Valley is also very famous. Among Southern Rhone, Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous. It generally uses Grenache as the main grape, blended with Syrah (Shiraz) and Mourvedre, or more than ten other legally permitted grapes.

Domaine Charvin has always used very traditional winemaking methods, unfiltered and destemmed. Unlike most wineries, Domaine Charvin does not use oak barrels at all, aging entirely in concrete tanks. The aim is to preserve the wine's original aroma and rich fruitiness, avoiding being masked by oak flavors.

Domaine Charvin's vines average over 50 years old. Old vines produce significantly less, and studies suggest this leads to more concentrated fruit flavors. Furthermore, because the roots of old vines penetrate deeper into the soil than new vines, they can absorb more nutrients and water, reducing instability caused by varying vintages and weather. If you are interested in old vines, more information can be found here.

Jancis Robinson (2011.12.1) -
Dark crimson. Sweet, lifted, lightly jammy nose. Sweet elderberry flavours. Very focused with firm tannins. Dry finish.

When to drink- 2018 – 2030

Robert Parker-
More backward and concentrated, the wine exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as dense, black raspberry, black currant, garrigue, licorice and lavender characteristics. Full-bodied with undeniable elegance, minerality and precision, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring and should keep well for 15-20. This small, 20-acre estate owned by the Charvin family is located in the northwest sector of the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. It has long been one of my favorites for the elegance, purity and sensuality of the wines. 95+.
