Lowland Whisky: The Gentle and Elegant 'Lowland Ladies'

Lowland Whisky is produced in the southern part of Scotland, geographically close to England. Compared to the ruggedness of the Highlands and the wildness of Islay, Lowland Whisky is famous for its approachable 'light style'. Many distilleries exhibit aromas of fresh grass, citrus, and honeysuckle with a silky smooth palate. Once affectionately known as 'The Lowland Ladies', it is the perfect entry choice for whisky beginners or those who enjoy a refreshing taste.

Unique Craft: Why is Lowland Whisky So Smooth?

Triple distillation is a historical tradition in the Lowlands (influenced by Irish immigrants in the 19th century), though most distilleries now use double distillation, with only a few like Auchentoshan insisting on triple distillation for every drop. While not the only defining trait, it certainly contributes to the smoothness. Unlike the double distillation used for most Scotch, the extra distillation step removes more impurities and oils, creating an extremely pure, light-bodied spirit with lower alcohol harshness. Furthermore, the Lowlands traditionally use very little peat to dry malt, allowing the natural sweetness of grain and floral-fruity notes to shine. Famous Lowland Distilleries and Signature Styles

Though the Lowlands once had many distilleries followed by a period of silence, the region is currently undergoing a renaissance. Here are the classics and rising stars you should know:

1. Auchentoshan — Committed to Triple Distillation

Located near Glasgow, Auchentoshan is the only distillery in Scotland to insist on triple distilling every single drop of spirit. Its body is exceptionally pure, with signature notes of citrus, nuts, and crème brûlée. Often called the 'Breakfast Whisky', it makes an excellent aperitif.

2. Glenkinchie — The Garden of Edinburgh

Not far from Edinburgh, Glenkinchie is renowned for producing whisky with notes of fresh-cut grass, lemon cheesecake, and dried flowers. It is a vital component of the famous blend Johnnie Walker, providing a light framework to the blend.

3. Bladnoch — The Southern Reviver

The southernmost distillery in Scotland. Bladnoch whisky features distinct lemongrass, vanilla, and oak spices. Its style is slightly more robust than the others mentioned, showcasing the more resilient side of Lowland Whisky.
