The Islay Unveils 16, 20 & 30 YO Continuous Single Casks
Master of Malt Partners with Studio Minerva for Terroir-Driven Continuous Single Cask Whiskies
Independent spirits retailer Master of Malt has partnered with luxury design agency Studio Minerva to announce the launch of a new ultra-premium Scotch whisky brand, The Islay. Operating under what is believed to be an industry-first continuous single cask model, the brand debuts with three core expressions selected by Master of Malt Whisky Director Dr. Samuel J. Simmons.
The inaugural range comprises the 16-year-old Basalt, the 20-year-old Red Sandstone, and the 30-year-old Quartzite, all bottled at 46.3% ABV. Every cask is distilled and matured on Islay. The brand employs a traditional and increasingly rare slow reduction process, taking two weeks to bring the spirit down to 46.3% ABV. Under this continuous single cask model, each bottle originates from a single cask; once depleted, the next cask seamlessly succeeds it under the same name, age statement, and ABV, turning single cask uniqueness into an evergreen series.
Breaking Free from Distillery Identity: Rooted in Geology and Terroir
The Islay departs from the traditional narrative centered on individual distilleries by not disclosing the provenance of each expression, focusing instead on the broader terroir of Islay. The brand showcases shared island characteristics, including tropical fruit notes, distinct minerality, and underlying peat smoke. Simmons noted that the casks were selected to be as authentic as possible, drawing their character entirely from Islay itself.
The collaboration was born when both teams met at an industry event. Female-founded Studio Minerva, known for branding and packaging work with prestigious names like Laphroaig, Bushmills, Courvoisier, and Brugal, is launching its first proprietary brand. Managing Director Coral Harker noted that after spending over a decade building brands for others, creating their own had long been a dream; while most whisky brands start with distillery heritage, The Islay begins its story with the island's geology.
Explaining the decision to keep distilleries anonymous, Sam Simmons explained that Islay represents an unrivaled pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts worldwide. Therefore, these single malts are crafted to honor the island as a whole rather than directing attention to individual distillery names. Islay is home to several world-renowned Scotch distilleries celebrated globally for their peated single malts.
