Tasting Notes
- Nose: Powerful smoke intertwined with sweet malt, damp peat, and coal. Subtle notes of chocolate and warm cinnamon develop later.
- Palate: Full-bodied. Rich sweet malt, intense peat, and wood smoke coat the mouth. A distinct coal sensation emerges mid-palate with clear definition.
- Finish: Exceptionally long and powerful, where sweetness and smoke coexist. The coal residue lingers longest.
Product Details
Laphroaig Quarter Cask draws inspiration from 19th-century traditions. During that era, smaller casks were often used for ease of transport via packhorse. This whisky is first matured in standard bourbon barrels before being transferred to 'Quarter Casks' (approx. 50 liters) for a second maturation. Because the contact area between the liquid and wood increases by about 30%, this non-age statement expression achieves incredible complexity, oiliness, and depth, offering prominent vanilla sweetness and oak spice.

The Laphroaig distillery, located on the south coast of Islay, has been famous since 1815 for its unique 'medicinal' notes, salty sea breeze, and heavy peat style. It is one of the few distilleries that maintains its own floor maltings. Laphroaig is polarizing, often described as a 'love it or hate it' malt.
The Quarter Cask expression honors this history. Bottled at a higher 48% ABV and non-chill filtered, it preserves all the esters and flavor molecules. It was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2018 Spirits Masters and a 'Liquid Gold Award' in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible. For fans of pure Islay intensity, this is an essential classic.
