A New Era for Islay Whisky: Laggan Bay's First Spirit Cask Filled

Laggan Bay Distillery, under Ian Macleod Distillers (IMD), has officially opened on the island of Islay, Scotland. Granted planning permission in 2022, the distillery has successfully become the 11th operational distillery on the island, ahead of Elixir Distillers' Portintruan, despite its opening moving from 2025 to March 2026. On April 2, 2026, IMD Managing Director Leonard Russell, his son Tom Russell, and Distillery Manager Malcolm Rennie filled the first cask, marking a major milestone for the family business.

Pursuing Pure Flavor, Continuing Islay Tradition

The core philosophy of Laggan Bay Distillery lies in the pursuit of purity and balanced flavor, aiming to bring a unique and representative style to Islay. Leonard Russell stated that the distillery is not meant to replicate existing whiskies but to create its own character through its location, talent, and unique process choices. Distillery Manager Malcolm Rennie, an Islay native with decades of Scotch whisky experience, has assembled a new production team dedicated to crafting a Single Malt whisky that embodies the local environment and brand vision.

Deep Roots in Community and Environmental Sustainability

The distillery's name is inspired by the windswept Laggan Bay coastline, with its logo featuring the bottlenose dolphins often seen in local waters. The distillery places high importance on environmental protection, utilizing a wetland system to treat liquid waste and support local wildlife. Furthermore, it is exploring renewable energy solutions with local organizations. In terms of community contribution, Laggan Bay Distillery is committed to long-term investment and providing local employment, fulfilling its corporate social responsibility.

As the whisky enters the maturation phase, Laggan Bay Distillery will gradually reveal its product style, cask programs, and future release details. To allow enthusiasts to experience its charm, the distillery will hold a public event on May 31 during this year's Fèis Ìle festival. Visitors will have the opportunity to be among the first to tour the facilities, meet the distillation team, and learn about the birth of this rising star in Islay whisky.
