Exploring the Collision of Heavy Peat and Rare Sherry Casks: Lagg's New Experimental Release

Isle of Arran Distillers subsidiary Lagg Distillery recently unveiled a new limited small-batch expression: Lagg Single Malt Manzanilla Sherry Finish. Limited to approximately 2,000 bottles worldwide, this Scotch whisky is bottled at a cask strength of 57.6% ABV, non-chill filtered, and with no added caramel coloring. This release follows the Palo Cortado version from early 2025, marking the distillery's second small-batch experimental work, continuing Lagg Distillery's deep exploration of combining rare sherry casks with heavy peat spirit.

Coastal Sherry Charm and Masterful Craftsmanship

The maturation process of this whisky is highly meticulous, beginning in first-fill and second-fill Bourbon barrels before being transferred to first-fill Manzanilla Sherry casks for a finish of over a year. Manzanilla Sherry is produced in the coastal town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the Jerez region of Spain, where the unique Flor yeast layer imparts a light, dry character with mineral saltiness. Distillery Manager Graham Omand personally selected the casks, aiming to inject a coastal freshness into Lagg's robust and powerful peated spirit through these special sherry casks.

Perfect Balance of Heavy Peat and Coastal Mineral Notes

On the palate, this whisky presents sweetness from syrup and candied cherries, accompanied by warm spices. The taste is led by spicy honey sweetness, intertwined with aromas of red fruits and cherry syrup, and finishes with peat smoke and a sea-breeze-like salty mineral quality. Located at the southern tip of the Isle of Arran, Lagg Distillery has established a global reputation with its core range, including Kilmory and Corriecravie, since opening seven years ago. Unlike the Lochranza Distillery in the north, Lagg Distillery focuses on producing heavy peat styles. This release is now available at major retail channels worldwide.
