SMWS Unveils 'Peat Plants II' Whisky Collection
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society SMWS today October 10 launched its Premium Creators Collection second installment 'Peat Plants II'. This limited edition single malt Scotch whisky series comprises four expressions inspired by Scotland's west coast islands, focusing on showcasing medicinal and maritime peat characteristics.
The four whiskies released this time are an aged 21-year-old Islay whisky named 'Tarred and Heathered'; an aged 19-year-old Highland whisky named 'Ocean Blossom'; an aged 31-year-old Islay whisky named 'Maritime Drift'; and an aged 26-year-old Islay whisky named 'Beachside Smokehouse'.
SMWS whisky creation director Euan Campbell stated, 'This series aims to celebrate the robust and medicinal qualities of west coast peat.' He further explained that the society meticulously selected a diverse range of expressions from Islay, as well as similarly intense whiskies from the Isle of Mull. These high phenol content, flavorful new make spirits cover a spectrum from rich tropical fruit and smoky notes to extreme phenolic characteristics, demonstrating the rich layers of peat whiskies.
According to official tasting notes, the flavor profiles of this series include smoky salmon reminiscent of peated grilling, intense sea breeze notes like scraped barnacles, the sweetness of lobster drizzled with honey, and a smoky licorice root tea flavor. These unique flavor combinations are sure to satisfy seasoned whisky enthusiasts' pursuit of peat characteristics.
