Strada Ferrata: The Craft Beer Spirit of Italian Whisky

The Rise of Italian Whisky: How Strada Ferrata Infuses Craft Beer Soul into Single Malts

Italy has long been led by Grappa or herbal liqueurs, but it is a relatively fresh face in the whisky world. Ten years ago, there was no domestic whisky production; today, 20 distilleries have flourished. Among them, Strada Ferrata in Seregno, founded in 2019, is a pioneer of this wave. Founders Stefano Zanetto and Benedetto Cannatelli, originally operating Railroad Brewing Co., brought their expertise in malt selection and fermentation to distilling. Winning two gold medals at the World Whiskies Awards, they have successfully put Italian whisky on the international map.

Diverse Malt Selection and Unique Fermentation

The team collaborated deeply with Montana's Whistling Andy Distillery to refine their processes, bringing a brewer's obsession with high-quality grains to distillation. They select three core malts: 100% Italian-grown Monaco malt with caramel notes, German beechwood-smoked Rauch malt, and Peated malt imported from Scotland. This precise ingredient control, combined with long fermentation, gives the spirit a distinct complexity. Master Distiller and bartender Marco Giannasso has even begun experimenting with non-barley grains, showcasing a relentless curiosity.

Innovative Italian Aging: Wine Casks and Experimental Woods

In maturation, Strada Ferrata showcases Italian innovation. Beyond traditional Ex-bourbon casks, they utilize local resources like Taurasi red wine casks, Marsala, and Moscato dessert wine casks, even exploring non-oak materials like Acacia. Among their four Single Malt expressions, award-winners blend smoke, ripe fruit, and layers from beer-seasoned barrels. They plan a full market launch within two years, aiming to define a unique Italian whisky identity through quality ingredients and aesthetic mastery rather than simply mimicking Scotch traditions.
