Lochlea Unveils 2nd Red Wine Cask: Italian Sangiovese Finish
Symphony of Mediterranean Terroir: Lochlea Explores the Beauty of Italian Sangiovese Casks
Located in Ayrshire, Scotland, the family-owned Lochlea distillery has recently announced the release of the second annual limited edition in its Red Wine Cask series. This Single Malt Whisky follows the success of last year's debut, which featured Grenache oak casks from the south of France. For the 2026 edition, the distillery turns its gaze toward the other side of the Mediterranean, showcasing a different terroir. The spirit was initially matured in first-fill bourbon barrels before being transferred to hand-selected Sangiovese red wine casks from the Tuscany region of Italy for final finishing, adding deeper layers of flavor to the core spirit.
Pure and Natural Tasting Sensation
Bottled at 46% ABV, this new release maintains its natural color and is non-chill filtered to preserve the original vitality of the whisky. According to the distillery's official tasting notes, the whisky offers inviting aromas of red berries, baked apples, and honey, accompanied by subtle spice. On the palate, it presents a silky, creamy texture where rich red berry and nutty flavors intertwine, concluding with a gentle spice and a pleasant oak finish. This series aims to explore the infinite potential of combining single malt whisky with grape fruitiness through collaborations with various renowned wine regions.

Quality Commitment from Farm to Bottle
Lochlea Production Manager Darren McCormick noted that this new release not only deepens the distillery's technical expertise in handling red wine casks but also sets the tone for future expressions in the series. As one of only two distilleries in Scotland to grow their own barley on-site, Lochlea ensures rigorous quality control from the barley fields to oak cask maturation within their Ayrshire facility. Having opened in 2022, the distillery has quickly become a representative of the "farm-to-bottle" movement in the Scotch new wave, continuing to focus on the connection between terroir and agricultural heritage.
