Whisky Market Cools? Ian Macleod Cuts Glengoyne Output
Strategic Adjustments Amid Market Correction: Major Output Cuts at Two Distilleries
Scottish spirits group Ian Macleod Distillers recently announced a 30% reduction in annual production at its Glengoyne and Rosebank distilleries in response to cooling global market demand. The company stated that this decision is a strategic adjustment based on a weakened outlook for future demand. In contrast, production at the Tamdhu distillery in Speyside remains steady due to ongoing engineering projects, while the single malt distillery in Himachal Pradesh, India, continues normal operations to supply the local market.
Tourism Sector Challenges: Staffing Cuts and Delayed Construction
Beyond production setbacks, the group's tourism ventures are facing significant challenges. The newly opened Rosebank and the Edinburgh Gin flagship in Edinburgh have both reported losses due to lower-than-expected visitor numbers and high staffing costs. Consequently, the group plans to reduce operating hours and streamline personnel while halting warehouse construction in Stirlingshire. The group noted that while Rosebank and the new Islay distillery, Laggan Bay, will take time to generate profit, established distilleries like Glengoyne and Tamdhu will provide sufficient business support.

Navigating the Market Adjustment: Investing in Brand and Sustainability
Regarding market performance, Ian Macleod saw a significant drop in annual profits as global demand for spirits receded. While the North American market remains stable, Asia and Europe continue to struggle. The company pointed out that 2022-2023 represented a peak for Single Malt Scotch, and the market is currently in an adjustment phase. Despite these hurdles, the group continues to invest in brand resources and is implementing energy-saving heat recovery technology at Tamdhu and Laggan Bay to enhance sustainability and maintain competitiveness.
