The House of Suntory has announced the launch of Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak, a limited-edition Japanese single malt whisky crafted to celebrate the distillery's century-long bond with Spanish oak casks. Matured in refill Spanish oak casks used two or more times, this release is slated for 20 global markets, arriving first in the UK on November 1, 2026.

Harmony of Subtle Oak and Red Fruit Flavors

This whisky emphasizes the distinct characteristics that Spanish oak develops after its first-fill stage. According to the brand, as Spanish oak enters its refill lifecycle, its oak influence softens, enabling signature ripe red fruit notes to harmonize deeply with the bright, elegant fruitiness inherent to Yamazaki spirit. The limited bottling will launch across 20 markets, including the US, UK, China, Germany, Australia, France, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Canada, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Mexico, Malaysia, Thailand, the UAE, Switzerland, and Sweden.

Official Tasting Notes and Wabi-Sabi Philosophy

According to official tasting notes, the liquid displays a bright amber hue. The nose presents candied apricot roasted with cloves and nutmeg. The palate delivers layered notes of fresh cherry, dried fig, charred peach, and shaved cocoa, leading to a rich, fruity coffee finish with subtle woodsmoke nuances.

Suntory connects this release with the Japanese philosophy of "wabi-sabi"—appreciating the beauty found in the passage and evolution of time. The brand notes that casks acquire new dimensions past their first fill, expressing a more refined, mellow, and vibrant Spanish oak character while maintaining Yamazaki's core depth and complexity.

A Century of Craftsmanship and Diverse Maturation

Ever since founder Shinjiro Torii established Japan's first and oldest malt whisky distillery, Yamazaki Distillery, in 1923, Spanish oak has formed an integral part of its heritage. This new expression embodies the Japanese spirit of "monozukuri" craftsmanship and "tsukuriwake" artisan diversity, allowing blenders to pioneer versatile whisky styles. Today, Yamazaki's core portfolio—from Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve to the 12, 18, and 25 Year Old expressions—blends spirits matured in American oak, Spanish oak, and Japanese Mizunara casks. In recent years, the distillery has also highlighted Spanish oak through releases like the 2022 Tsukuriwake Spanish Oak Edition and the travel-retail Kogei Collection.
