Complete Distiller Autonomy: Torabhaig Creates a Pioneering Experimental Limited Series

Located on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, the Torabhaig distillery has announced the launch of its new Distillers’ Series of limited single malt whiskies. This pioneering, industry-first initiative breaks convention by tasking two of the distillery's nine distillers with taking the reins for a full month each year, granting them complete creative freedom. The distillers have full authority to select malted barley, yeast strains, fermentation times, and final cask maturation methods, interpreting completely distinct flavor stories within the same stills to showcase the team's bold innovative spirit in exploring new raw materials and craftsmanship.

The Debut: Iona’s First Edition - A Deep Dive into Chocolate Malt

As the debut release of the series, Torabhaig – The Distillers’ Series: Iona’s First Edition is bottled at 60.9% ABV and crafted by young distiller Iona Macphie. She joined Torabhaig at age 21 and completed her distillation at 23, making her the youngest distiller ever to lead the process. This expression centers around chocolate malt, a uniquely rich and bittersweet grain from Crisp Maltings in Portgordon. She detected the chocolate character just 15 minutes into distillation, promptly adjusting the distillation time to extract and lock in the deepest, richest flavor layers.

Simultaneous Release: Niall’s First Edition - Interpreting Coastal and Tropical Flair

Releasing alongside it is Torabhaig – The Distillers’ Series: Niall’s First Edition at 59.3% ABV, crafted by distiller Niall Culbertson. He integrated childhood memories of boat trips to the bay into his creation, aiming to craft a whisky with distinct coastal character and maritime flair. Adding a touch of brown malt and dark crystal malt to a lightly peated base malt, and partially maturing the spirit in ex-rum casks, he successfully endowed the body with tropical fruit aromas and a light, gently sweet caramel note.

Limited Release and Future Outlook

Both distillers expressed amazement at the final results. Iona Macphie noted that although the chocolate malt made the fermentation wash as dark as stout, the final spirit turned out exceptionally smooth and rich; Niall Culbertson also stated that the final product perfectly blended the expected tropical fruit notes with sea breeze character. The Distillers’ Series project plans to launch two limited single malt whiskies each year, continually exploring the flavor trajectories of various whiskies over time; the first wave of two expressions is limited to 5,250 bottles each.
