Isle of Raasay Launches World's First Chinkapin Matured Scotch

Breaking Boundaries: The World's First Full Chinkapin Oak Maturation Released

The Isle of Raasay Distillery, located in the Hebrides of Scotland, has recently announced the launch of the third member of its core range, The Chinkapin. This single malt whisky is considered an industry pioneer, as it is the world's first to be fully matured in Chinkapin oak casks (Quercus muehlenbergii). While this North American native oak has been used for finishing in the past, the distillery claims to be the first to use it for the complete maturation of both peated and unpeated spirits. Bottled at 50.2% ABV, this whisky will be distributed to over 50 countries, including China, Japan, the USA, France, and Germany.

The Interplay of Precision Craftsmanship and Classic Flavors

In terms of production, this whisky utilizes 100% Scottish barley and blends spirits matured in both virgin and refill Chinkapin oak casks. The distillery specifically chose 190-liter small casks and applied a High Toast & High Char treatment to increase the contact between the liquid and the wood, imparting rich color and complex flavors. On the palate, one can sense wood notes and dark fruit aromas, with a taste profile of BBQ sauce, honey, and lime, finishing with sandalwood and a long-lasting smoke. Renowned writer Dave Broom once described its flavor as "evoking breakfast time in a classic American diner."

A Tribute to Island Community and the Distiller's Botanical Vision

Co-founder and Master Distiller Alasdair Day brings a botanical background, and his precise cask policy gives Raasay's spirits remarkable depth at a young age. The distillery has performed exceptionally well recently, winning Best Scotch Whisky at the Las Vegas Global Spirits Awards, and Day was named Icons of Whisky Scotland 2026 Distiller of the Year. Every bottle of The Chinkapin is distilled, matured, and bottled on the island, and the bottle design features the number of the island's 161 residents, reflecting support for the local community. This release joins The Dùn to further complete the brand's core range.
