日本 Kiyokawa 酒廠首款單一麥芽威士忌 The Cask 於 Nagano 隆重發布

Kiyokawa Distillery Launches First Single Malt: The Cask

Traces of Terroir and Time: A Milestone for Nagano's Craft Distillery on the Global Stage

Located in Nagano, Japan, the Kiyokawa Distillery recently held a launch event at the historic Fujiya Gohonjin restaurant to officially unveil its first single malt whisky, The Cask, First Edition. This Single Cask expression is bottled at Cask Strength of 61.1%, marking the first milestone for the distillery after years of quiet dedication. The event brought together local business leaders, government officials, and whisky enthusiasts to witness the rise of a craft distillery committed to expressing regional character.

A Deep Dialogue Between Local Barley and Sherry Casks

Matured for three years in ex-Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, the core feature of this whisky is its use of 100% local barley. This barley is grown by the distillery's own farming team in the Iiyama region, in collaboration with local agricultural institutes to develop a unique variety capable of thriving in extreme climates—from heavy winter snow to scorching summer heat. The distillery's commitment to local materials extends beyond the liquid; the packaging emphasizes sustainability, featuring locally sourced glass and labels made from handcrafted Washi paper infused with barley husks, highlighting a deep connection to the land.

Distilling Philosophy and Layered Flavors

Founder and Master Distiller David Troiano explained his philosophy at the event, emphasizing that whisky is a memory of time and place, and a single cask is an honest vessel for regional characteristics. He noted that Kiyokawa does not chase high production volumes but focuses on building brand foundations and regional identity. On the palate, the expression reveals aromas of dried figs, plum jam, and roasted nuts, with a rich sherry sweetness, baking spices, and a deep Umami. The finish is long and warming, with layers of cocoa and oak, showcasing the unique character bestowed by the mountain climate.

As the Japanese whisky market continues to expand, Kiyokawa’s entry represents a new wave of craft distilleries moving toward regional specialization. These small producers increasingly emphasize terroir and grain provenance, seeking a market position distinct from traditional large distilleries. The release of The Cask, First Edition not only showcases the diversity of Japanese whisky but also proves that craft distilleries can overcome natural challenges through discipline and patience to create outstanding whiskies with depth, structure, and restraint.
