The leadership team consists of Koji Shimaoka, Ian Chang, and Yoshie Shimaoka. Despite the current market adjustment phase, KDI remains committed to a long-term strategy centered on quality and aging. Koji noted that time gives whisky its unique value, which is why the company focuses on high-end positioning and patient maturation to build brand influence that lasts decades.
Furano's Frigid Climate: An Ideal Environment for Long-Term Aging
Furaliss Distillery will complement rather than replicate the style of Komoro Distillery, which is expected to release its first product in 2026. Located in the heart of Hokkaido, the distillery benefits from harsh winters and significant seasonal temperature variations. With average temperatures lower than most Scottish regions, Furano's natural environment is considered ideal for long-term maturation.
Ian Chang, formerly the master blender at Kavalan, stated that he has long dreamed of creating whiskies specifically designed for long-term aging, and Furano's climate and culture offer the perfect opportunity. Supported by strategic investment from Seibu Group, this distillery will connect craftsmanship with nature, creating a unique whisky style and serving as a vital window to the charms of Hokkaido.
