The Glendronach Unveils 200th Anniversary 14YO Edition

Combining Dual Sherry Casks and Claret Casks to Commemorate Historic Distillery Milestone

Highland distillery The Glendronach has officially unveiled its new 14-year-old single malt Scotch whisky, the Boynsmill House Edition, celebrating the historic milestone of the distillery's 200th anniversary. This limited-edition whisky is scheduled for release on September 1, 2026.

Triple Cask Maturation: Dual Sherry and Claret Casks

The Boynsmill House Edition blends tradition and innovation in wood craftsmanship, maturing for 14 years across classic Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie also introduced selected Claret wine casks into the maturation process. This third oak cask influence infuses vibrant red berry aromas and an elegant, complex depth into the spirit. Bottled at 46.8% ABV, the whisky displays a deep, rich copper hue.

Official Tasting Notes and Master Blender's Perspective

According to the distillery's official tasting notes, the nose reveals an abundant interplay of fruit and nuts, featuring Highland toffee, blackberries, stone fruit, hazelnuts, and raisins. On the palate, a rich and mature malty character emerges alongside dried fruit and nutty nuances, leading into smooth, rounded notes of chocolate caramel.

Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie noted that the Boynsmill House Edition commemorates the 200th anniversary of The Glendronach, embodying the timeless allure of Highland spirit and the mastery of sherry cask maturation. She highlighted that within this expression lies the distillery's enduring character: ripe malt, Highland toffee, blackberries, and raisins, layered with delicate touches of stone fruit and plums, rounded off by a silky finish. This whisky honors both the enduring terroir of the "Valley of the Brambles" and an essential milestone in the brand's heritage.

Traced Back to the Historic 1826 Estate

The distillery's history dates back to 1826, when founder James Allardice established it on the Boynsmill estate—known as the "Valley of the Brambles"—and secured Scotland's second legal distilling license. This new age-statement release pays tribute to Boynsmill House, the historic home where the distillery began. The use of Claret casks specifically nods to the fine wines Allardice once poured for high-society guests at gatherings, his charisma and wit becoming an integral part of the brand's lore. In celebration of the bicentennial, the distillery has completed the restoration of Boynsmill House, which will welcome visitors to the founding estate exclusively by invitation.
