The GlenDronach Bicentenary: Oldest 56-Year-Old Whisky Unveiled

A Sherry Legend Spanning Half a Century: The 1968 'Holy Grail' Officially Bottled

Located in the East Highlands of Scotland, The GlenDronach has officially unveiled the oldest single malt whisky in the distillery's history to mark its upcoming 200th anniversary in 2026. This landmark 56-year-old whisky was distilled in 1968, with only 200 bottles available worldwide, symbolizing every glorious year the distillery has journeyed through since its founding. Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie noted that the 1968 vintage has long been hailed as the "Holy Grail" among whisky connoisseurs, showcasing an unparalleled depth of history.

Exquisite Sherry Maturation: Decades in Spanish Oak

The maturation process of this rare whisky demonstrates ultimate craftsmanship and patience. It began in September 1968, when the Highland spirit was filled into rare Oloroso sherry casks from Spain, where it rested for over forty years. In 2014, the liquid was meticulously transferred to three Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads for a final stage of marriage in traditional dunnage warehouses. The whisky spent a total of nearly 57 years in Spanish oak, finally bottled in August 2025. Bottled at 44.9% ABV, it presents an intense "Sherry Crescendo" of flavors.

A Fusion of Art and Craftsmanship

Beyond the exceptional quality of the liquid, the presentation is a masterpiece of art and design. Each bottle is housed in a Black Walnut cabinet hand-carved by master woodworker John Galvin, a process taking approximately 80 hours and comprising 148 individual parts. The whisky is held in a hand-blown Glencairn crystal decanter adorned with custom brass detailing. As masters of sherry cask maturation under the Brown-Forman portfolio, The GlenDronach has remained committed to traditional methods since 1826. This global release of its oldest expression once again proves the distillery's reverence for time and oak.
