A Multi-Cask Maturation of Dual Sherry & Rare Mongolian Virgin Oak

Speyside distillery The GlenAllachie has officially announced the launch of The GlenAllachie Sinteis Part IV, the fourth limited edition in its acclaimed Sinteis series. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 58.5% ABV, this 10-year-old Scotch single malt whisky continues the series' exploration of wood innovation. GlenAllachie has always placed cask craft at its heart, and this release embodies the concept of "three paths converging: three casks, three stories, one extraordinary dram."

Multi-Cask Maturation and Rare Mongolian Oak

This single malt undergoes a complex maturation process. The spirit initially aged in ex-bourbon casks before being transferred separately into Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry puncheons. Following their respective sherry cask maturations, both spirits were married together and finished in rare Mongolian virgin oak casks.

The series name "Sinteis" derives from the Scottish Gaelic word for "synthesis," designed to blend expressive virgin oak with rich, indulgent sherry wood. The chosen wood, Quercus mongolica, originates from Eastern Asian forests and features an exceptionally tight grain and high density. Sourced only from fallen trees aged over a century, this oak is exceedingly scarce and virtually unprecedented in Scotch whisky aging. The Mongolian oak imparts notes of rich caramel, sandalwood, and incense, complemented by dried fruit, dark chocolate, and nuttiness from the Oloroso, alongside sweet toffee and treacle from Pedro Ximénez.

Tasting Notes and Blending Philosophy

According to official tasting notes, GlenAllachie Sinteis Part IV opens with aromas of baked pastries, butterscotch, brandy-soaked orchard fruits, cocoa, treacle tart, cinnamon, and crystalised ginger. On the palate, expect layers of candied hazelnuts, warm baking spices, plum syrup, spiced roasted oranges, vanilla ice cream, mocha, Manuka honey, and fig jam. The finish lingers with dark chocolate, lush orchard fruit, and warm baked goods.

Master Distiller Billy Walker commented that the Sinteis series continues to push the boundaries of dual wood maturation, with Part IV offering a fresh challenge and bold adventure. He noted that while Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks are familiar territory, introducing Mongolian virgin oak into the equation was an exciting endeavour. Given the wood's demanding profile and rarity in whisky making, the team relied heavily on intuition and experience, and are immensely proud of the captivating character it delivered.
