Filliers Single Malt Mizunara Cask Finish: 393 Bottles
Belgian Malted Barley Distillation and Dual Cask Maturation
Belgian family-owned distillery Filliers has announced the launch of a limited-edition single malt whisky named Master Distiller Mizunara Oak Finish. Finished in rare Japanese Mizunara oak casks and limited to just 393 bottles worldwide, it is described as Filliers' most exclusive and prestigious whisky release to date.
Crafted personally by Master Blender Pedro Saez Del Burgo, the whisky was distilled in February 2019 using 100% Belgian malted barley sourced through regenerative agriculture. Regarding its maturation process, this single malt was first aged for 5 years in first-fill bourbon casks, followed by a secondary finishing period of 2 full years in Japanese Mizunara oak casks.
Characteristics and Flavor Profile of Mizunara Oak
Mizunara oak is also known internationally as Japanese water oak. Due to its porous grain and brittle physical structure, crafting sturdy casks from Mizunara presents formidable challenges for coopers. According to Filliers, this precious Japanese oak imparts a velvety smoothness to the spirit, alongside delicate and elegant aromatic layers of coconut, sandalwood, and tropical fruit.
Master Distiller Mizunara Oak Finish is bottled at 45.1% ABV. On the nose, the whisky offers rich notes of coconut, honey, sandalwood, red apple, dark chocolate, and ripe apricot. The palate presents a creamy, velvety texture featuring coconut, vanilla, ripe apricot, and tropical fruit, complemented by subtle grapefruit nuances and a refined cedarwood finish.
Master Blender Pedro Saez Del Burgo stated: "With this whisky, we bring two worlds of whisky together. Thanks to the influence of Mizunara wood, the classic structure of bourbon cask aging reveals surprising elegance, modernity, and exotic flair. It is a whisky crafted for connoisseurs who seek both authenticity and discovery."
Prior to releasing this Mizunara cask expression, the Belgian distillery debuted its oldest expression in history earlier this year: the Filliers 34 Years Old Family Reserve single grain whisky, which stands as the oldest aged whisky in Belgium.
