Independent Bottler Pioneers Mizunara Cask Finish, Stuns with Auchentoshan 14-Year-Old

Renowned Scotch whisky independent bottler Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has recently announced the release of its first-ever whisky finished in Japanese Mizunara oak casks, featured in its limited-edition Octave series. The new release is The Octave Auchentoshan 14 Year Old Mizunara Cask, bottled at 52.1% ABV, and is a triple-distilled single malt whisky.

This whisky was initially matured in ex-bourbon casks before being transferred to Mizunara Octave small oak casks for a four-month finish. The Mizunara casks arrived directly from Japan in March this year to the Huntly distillery headquarters in Aberdeenshire. Although Mizunara oak is widely recognized as one of the most challenging wood types to work with due to its porous nature, it is equally renowned for imparting an exceptionally elegant and complex flavor profile to whisky.

Flavor Evolution and Complexity

Prior to the cask finish, this single malt showcased notes of vanilla yogurt, honey, ginger, soft citrus, and a hint of spice. Following the baptism in the Mizunara Octave small oak casks, these flavors evolved into creamy rice pudding, golden syrup, broad-rind citrus, cedar wood, and a long, warming ginger finish, delivering a stunning flavor transformation and rich complexity.
