Bunnahabhain Unveils 2025 Cask Strength 21 Year Old Scotch

Islay distillery Bunnahabhain has unveiled its 2025 edition of the 21 Year Old Cask Strength single malt Scotch whisky.

This release marks the second bottling in the brand's popular 21 Year Old Cask Strength range. The whisky was reportedly matured initially in Ex-Oloroso Sherry casks before undergoing a 21-month finishing period in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks.

This new bottling is part of Bunnahabhain's annual initiative to offer whisky enthusiasts an unadulterated taste straight from the cask. This year's edition features a selection of twenty-one casks for bottling.

Compared to the 2024 release, the 2025 edition presents a slightly lower strength. The distillery claims this results in a more nuanced overall flavor. Bunnahabhain Master Blender Julieann Fernandez stated that the Cask Strength range is a significant undertaking for her, emphasizing that not all whiskies present well at cask strength and not all can endure long sherry maturation. However, Bunnahabhain's unique and complex spirit is capable of meeting these challenges.

Fernandez pointed out the subtle shift in ABV had a notable impact on the final liquid. She elaborated, "With the slight drop in ABV this year, you might think it doesn't make a big difference to the spirit. But cask strength isn't always about power, sometimes it's about composure and elegance.".

The whisky is non-chill filtered and contains no added coloring. According to the distillery's official tasting notes, the whisky offers aromas of "rich dried fruits, toffee syrup, and brown sugar." The palate is described as having notes of "sweet raisins, cocoa, and chocolate cherry, having been steeped in PX Sherry," leading to a "long and warm" finish.
