Bruichladdich Unveils World First Quadruple Distilled 18-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bruichladdich Distillery has announced the launch of what it claims is the world's first 18-year-old single malt Scotch whisky to be quadruple distilled, named X4+18 Edition 01. This limited edition bottling is restricted to 2,400 bottles, distilled by Jim McEwan MBE in 2006 and matured by Master Distiller Adam Hannett. The spirit underwent quadruple distillation to a strength of 85% ABV before being aged for 18 years in bourbon and Rivesaltes casks. This inaugural release is the first in a four-part series from the distillery, with the second edition expected in 2027.
Adam Hannett stated that Bruichladdich has always strived to push boundaries, and the X4+18 Edition 01 represents a culmination of bold experimentation, 18 years of patience, and a commitment to its Islay home, proving that innovation can coexist with elegance, excitement, and exceptional flavor.
The concept draws inspiration from the writings of 17th-century traveler Martin Martin, who documented a 'dangerous whisky' called usquebaugh-baul on the Scottish islands that was quadruple distilled.
Jim McEwan has previously experimented with quadruple distillation, having released Bruichladdich X4+3 Perilous Spirit (2009), Octomore Discovery (2014), and Octomore X4+10 (2019). Hannett emphasized that quadruple distillation is virtually unheard of in the whisky world. While some Irish and Scottish distilleries triple distill for a lighter, smoother profile, Bruichladdich believes it is the only distillery bringing quadruple distilled whisky to the market. He described the final result as 'unbelievable', unique, and distinctly different from its other offerings.
The whisky is presented in Bruichladdich's Luxury Re/Defined bottle, made from recycled glass, with the label designed by creative agency Thirst. Official tasting notes describe an aroma of dried figs, sweet mango, and toasted oak, with flavors of marmalade fruitiness, Christmas cake, and citrus jam on the palate. This bottling originates from the same experimental program as Bruichladdich's Black Art series. As a B Corp certified distillery, Bruichladdich will celebrate its 25th anniversary in January 2026, with further special releases anticipated to commemorate the milestone.
