Berry Bros. & Rudd Unveils 2025 Odyssey Series Crafted In Cask
Berry Bros. & Rudd, Britain's longest-established wine and spirits merchant, has recently released its 2025 Odyssey series, named "Crafted In Cask", which comprises 20 single cask Scotch whiskies. The series' most significant characteristic is that all the whiskies have undergone a secondary maturation in wine casks for at least three years. This release of the 2025 Odyssey series brings together fine spirits from 11 different distilleries across Scotland, showcasing the company's independent bottling expertise honed over more than 170 years.
The "Crafted in Cask" series features whiskies selected from some of Scotland's historic distilleries, including Blair Athol, Teaninich, Glen Moray, Caol Ila, and Auchentoshan, among others. Each whisky has been given a secondary maturation in carefully chosen wine casks that complement its original character. The variety of cask types is extensive, encompassing wine casks from different regions and styles such as Margaux, Pomerol, Moscatel, and Pedro Ximénez.
Official tasting notes describe the Blair Athol bottling as having notes of "blackcurrant soft candy" and "creamy caramel biscuits", while peated whiskies from the Islay region, matured in sherry casks, exhibit "coal smoke" and "molasses" characteristics. Felix Dear, Spirits Curator at Berry Bros. & Rudd, commented, "The An Odyssey: Crafted in Cask series embodies the spirit of Scotland, celebrating the diversity of its regions, the uniqueness of each distillery, and the transformative power of wood."
This secondary maturation technique reflects an industry trend where an increasing number of Scotch whisky producers are experimenting with wine casks for flavor reinvention. Leveraging its wine trading network, established in London in 1698 and spanning centuries, Berry Bros. & Rudd has access to premium casks from renowned wine-producing regions. The series marks a significant launch in the competitive single cask market, with its unique nature and limited availability highly sought after by whisky collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
The alcohol content of these whiskies ranges from 48.6% to 63.2% ABV, with 14 of the bottlings being available in the global market, underscoring Berry Bros. & Rudd's deep expertise and discerning palate in the spirits domain.
