Ardbeg Unveils Dark Reserve Finished in Dark Sherry Casks
Combining Bourbon and Dark Sherry Cask Maturation: A Limited Release Crafted for Oceania Club Members
LVMH-owned Ardbeg distillery on Islay, Scotland, has announced the release of a brand-new limited-edition single malt whisky, Dark Reserve. Specially created for The Whisky Club members in Australia and New Zealand, this expression is finished in intensely dark sherry casks.

Dual-Cask Vatting and Dark Sherry Cask Finishing
In crafting Dark Reserve, the Ardbeg whisky creation team blended whisky fully matured in dark sherry casks with liquid aged in classic ex-bourbon barrels, before finishing the vatting in some of the distillery's darkest and most heavily toasted dark sherry casks. The production of dark sherry resembles Pedro Ximénez, where grapes are sun-dried to intensify the deep, sweet flavors of the Spanish fortified wine, imparting an exceptionally dark hue to the whisky. Seamus Carroll, General Manager of The Whisky Club, also revealed that these specially selected casks were sourced exclusively from a single sherry bodega.

Tasting Notes and Bottling Specifications
Bottled at 49.4% ABV, this single malt delivers rich layers imparted by the dark sherry casks. Aromas of dense molasses, nuts, dates, ginger, and cloves give way to palate notes of dark brown sugar, aromatic ginger, smoked paprika, and earthy tones—all seamlessly harmonized with Ardbeg's signature charcoal and deep peat smoke.

Ardbeg Master Blender Gillian Macdonald noted that this limited edition was tailor-made for passionate enthusiasts across Oceania. By combining liquid from classic bourbon barrels with rare dark sherry casks, it achieves a fiery, intense character bottled at near-cask strength to highlight its bold and distinctive personality. Seamus Carroll described the release as the distillery’s ultimate sherry-matured expression.
Homage to an Iconic Release and Launch Details
Dark Reserve draws inspiration from the iconic 2016 Ardbeg Day release, Dark Cove, which similarly utilized dark sherry cask maturation. The new limited edition will debut with exclusive preview tastings at Ardbeg Embassies across Australia and New Zealand starting September 24, before officially launching to The Whisky Club members on October 2. Club and Ardbeg Committee members will also have access to dedicated tasting events.
