Ardbeg Unveils Landmark Y2K 24-Year-Old Amontillado Sherry Cask Matured Whisky

Ardbeg has unveiled the second re-casked vintage whisky in its Y2K series, a significant 24-year-old single malt Scotch, notable for its first-time maturation in Amontillado sherry casks. This limited edition represents precious spirit from Ardbeg's full production resumption in 2000, marking a key milestone in the brand's history.

This rare Islay whisky signifies a pivotal revival for the Ardbeg distillery. Rescued from closure in 1997 by The Glenmorangie Company, Ardbeg underwent extensive renovations and resumed full production in 2000. Some of the spirit for this whisky comes from the distillery's 51-year-old stills, which were retired in 2001, making it exceptionally precious.

Ardbeg's Director of Whisky Creation, Dr. Bill Lumsden MBE, meticulously selected Amontillado sherry casks for the secondary maturation of some of the millennial-era spirit, blending it with bourbon cask-matured Ardbeg. This unique combination results in a whisky described by the distillery as 'utterly sublime', with an ABV of 47.8%. Dr. Lumsden stated, "The ultra-rare whiskies in our Y2K series are incredibly precious, marking the dawn of a new era for Ardbeg." The whisky also earned a Double Gold medal at the 2024 International Spirits Challenge.

According to the official tasting notes, the whisky offers aromas of creamy toffee, blooming blackcurrant, tar, coal tar soap, old leather, and almonds. The palate delivers intense smoky flavors, with notes of tar, campfire woodsmoke, and medicinal lozenges, evoking the sensation of being at a campfire. The long finish carries hints of mint, eucalyptus, linseed oil, and charcoal.

This release follows the 2024 launch of the Y2K series' 23-year-old version, which was matured in bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. The production volume for this 24-year-old expression is expected to be even rarer than its predecessor.
