Read more about the product story
Taketsuru 12 Years Old was created to honor Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka and the father of Japanese whisky. Having studied in Scotland, Mr. Taketsuru brought authentic whisky-making techniques back to Japan. This 'Pure Malt' expression is a blend consisting only of malt whiskies, without any grain whisky, which tests the blender's skill in mastering complex flavor profiles.
The heart of this whisky lies in the fusion of opposites. Yoichi malts are distilled using traditional direct coal-fired heating, resulting in a powerful and oily character. Miyagikyo malts are steam-heated, producing a delicate and fruity spirit. Balanced over 12 years of maturation, they achieve the velvet-smooth texture that defines this expression.
Regrettably, due to the global shortage of aged Japanese whisky stocks, Nikka decided to restructure its lineup around 2014. The age-statement 12-year-old was discontinued and replaced by Non-Age Statement (NAS) versions. This makes every remaining bottle of Taketsuru 12 a piece of history and a treasure from the golden age of Japanese whisky.
