Nikka Whisky has officially launched Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials 2026, the inaugural release in a five-part limited edition series marking the brand's 30th anniversary leading up to 2030. The series is slated to release one expression annually from 2026 to 2030, with each bottling focusing on a distinct element of the Taketsuru Pure Malt identity.

The debut release of Taketsuru is bottled at 43% ABV in a 70cl format. This Japanese whisky harmoniously blends malt whiskies from the Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido and the Miyagikyo distillery in Sendai. The highlight of the 2026 edition is the traditional coal-fired direct distillation technique employed at Yoichi—a heritage craft faithfully maintained since the distillery was founded in 1934.
According to Nikka Whisky, this expression bridges Yoichi's bold, peaty, and structured character with Miyagikyo's delicate, rounded, and fruity profile. Regarding Yoichi's craftsmanship, the brand noted that direct coal-fired distillation is exceedingly rare today, even in Scotland, and plays an indispensable role in imparting depth and muscular structure to the spirit.

According to the official tasting notes, the whisky opens with malted, lightly toasted cereal aromas accompanied by freshly baked biscuits, tart apricot jam, and subtle wood tones. The palate is rich and full-bodied, demonstrating remarkable depth, while the finish is long and sustained, layered with delicate peat smoke and gentle oak-derived bitterness.
Masataka Taketsuru & Brand Heritage
Taketsuru Pure Malt was originally introduced in 2000 as a tribute to Nikka Whisky founder Masataka Taketsuru. Born in 1894 into a sake brewing family and trained as a chemist, Taketsuru travelled to Scotland in 1918 on behalf of Settsu Shuzo to apprentice in distilling before returning to Japan to champion authentic whisky making. He established Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido in 1934 and Miyagikyo Distillery near Sendai in 1969, and Nikka Whisky's portfolio continues to be primarily crafted across these two historic locations today.
