Sotheby’s 2025 Wine & Spirits: Historic Growth & Strong Sales

New York Remains Global Trading Leader as Demand for Rare Assets Drives Historic Growth

Sotheby’s has released its 2025 Wine & Spirits annual report, showing that despite multiple global economic pressures, the department's overall performance continues to demonstrate strong resilience and steady growth. The 2025 annual results recorded a significant increase over 2024, making it one of the best-performing years since the department was founded in 1970, and reaffirming the lasting appeal of the fine wine and spirits market in a changing environment.

Global Layout and Market Vitality

Nick Pegna, Global Head of Sotheby’s Wine & Spirits, noted that the 2025 results showcase market vitality and reflect the high level of trust global collectors place in the auction house’s management of top-tier cellars. Looking back at the past decade, the business scale and influence have doubled compared to ten years ago, indicating strong global demand for rare assets. Geographically, the buyer structure is well-balanced across EMEA, the Americas, and Asia. Specifically, New York was the most prominent trading hub for the second consecutive year, outperforming Hong Kong; Europe remained the strongest global region, led by France and the UK.

Auction Highlights and Performance of Core Brands

In 2025, Sotheby’s organized dozens of auctions across several centers, nearly half of which were single-owner sales. New buyer participation increased significantly, with about one-third being first-time participants from over sixty countries. In terms of product categories, Wine remains the core pillar, attracting a large number of new buyers and leading the market. The Spirits category also performed well, with rare spirits from distilleries such as The Glenlivet and Laphroaig recording excellent results in Edinburgh and other locations.

Furthermore, Sotheby’s confirmed the renewal of its contract with Domaine des Hospices de Beaune until 2030, continuing to host this iconic auction and consolidating its leadership in the fine wine and spirits auction world.
