SMWS Launches New Whisky Collection Celebrating Traditional Worm Tub Craftsmanship
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) has introduced its newest Creators Collection series, focusing on the endangered worm tub distillation technique with three exceptional single-cask whiskies. These limited releases, aged 18 to 28 years, exemplify the bold flavors characteristic of this traditional craft.
This series features spirits from three Speyside distilleries that still use worm tub condensers. These coiled copper tubes were once standard in whisky production before being largely replaced by modern shell-and-tube condensers in the 1960s. The shorter contact time between vapor and copper in worm tubs yields a heavier, more robust spirit.
The collection includes three distinctive expressions: Cask No. 44.190 'Unleashing the Serpent,' initially aged 18 years in bourbon barrels then finished in first-fill hogsheads, offers complex notes of apple, jam, and Assam tea; Cask No. 76.157 'Beast Revealed,' fully matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, presents preserved fruits and spiced chocolate; while the 28-year-old Cask No. 36.228 'Coiling Copper' stands out with marzipan, dark chocolate, and tropical fruit flavors.
SMWS Master Blender Euan Campbell explained this series allows whisky enthusiasts to explore lesser-known aspects of production, embodying the society's spirit of innovation. Members can experience a vertical tasting set of all three expressions at SMWS tasting rooms.
This marks the fourth thematic series in the Creators Collection since its 2024 launch, following previous focuses on peated styles, SMWS heritage, and spring floral flavors. The collection provides educational tasting experiences by examining specific production techniques or flavor profiles.
With few distilleries worldwide still employing worm tub condensers, this series offers not just rare flavors but also serves as cultural preservation of Scottish whisky traditions.
