Meikle Tòir Launches First-Ever Single Cask Whiskies

The GlenAllachie Distillery recently announced the launch of two limited-edition single cask whiskies from its peated Meikle Tòir series, the first single cask bottlings in the range. The whiskies are a 2018 Pedro Ximénez Sherry Hogshead (exclusive to the distillery) and a 2019 Oloroso Sherry Hogshead (available online only), both showcasing the distillery's signature sherry cask-matured peated style.

Selected by whisky industry legend Billy Walker, these single cask expressions are bottled at cask strength. The Pedro Ximénez version offers aromas of fig jam, roasted hazelnuts, and honeyed spices, with flavors of orange peel, toasted honeycomb, and almond macaron. The Oloroso variant features notes of mellow tobacco, figs, and orange, with layers of mocha and smoked fruit on the palate.

Walker stated that these single cask whiskies perfectly embody the bold smoky character of the Meikle Tòir series, with added complexity from premium sherry cask maturation. The distillery uses mainland peat from St Fergus (rather than traditional Islay peat) to create a sweeter, more oak-smoke-driven profile. Production includes an extended 160-hour fermentation period, far exceeding industry standards.

Both whiskies are non-chill filtered and retain their natural cask color. The Pedro Ximénez expression is aged 7 years with a peat phenol level of 44PPM, while the Oloroso is aged 6 years at 47PPM. Walker emphasized that these cask-strength bottlings allow consumers to experience the whisky's raw character as if sampled directly from the cask.

This release marks Meikle Tòir's first single cask bottlings, with plans for more international single cask releases in the future. The GlenAllachie is one of Scotland's few independently owned distilleries, with 16 warehouses storing over 50,000 casks. Since gaining independence in 2017, the distillery has focused on flavor development through extended fermentation and unique cask management.
