Macallan Auctions Ultra-Rare Day of the Dead Whisky

Macallan has unveiled an exceptionally rare single cask whisky to celebrate Mexico's vibrant Day of the Dead, with only two bottles available globally. Named The Macallan Distil Your World Mexico Single Cask Limited Edition, this whisky is being auctioned exclusively through Sotheby's. Collectors will have the chance to acquire the second bottle, while the first will be permanently housed in Macallan's archives in Speyside, Scotland.

This whisky is a collaboration between Macallan and the Roca brothers of the Michelin three-star restaurant El Celler de Can Roca. Whisky maker Diane Stuart and Joan Roca explored the cultural significance of Mexico's Day of the Dead, meeting with several Mexican cultural figures, including renowned chef Elena Reygadas, Josefina Garcia from the Dolores Olmedo Museum, and marigold grower Luis Perez.

The whisky comes from a single American oak sherry cask (Cask No. 1964), filled on February 10, 2005, with an alcohol content of 54.9%. It boasts a natural deep marigold color, echoing the traditional flower of the Day of the Dead. Official tasting notes describe its aroma as featuring 'pineapple, grapefruit, and apple fruitiness, along with a rich orange peel scent.' The palate offers 'creamy caramel milk, cinnamon-dusted churros, and caramel-coated almonds,' balanced with 'rich vanilla pods and roasted pineapple,' and a finish of 'long-lasting tropical fruits, rich oak, and dark chocolate.'

The packaging design pays homage to Mexican cultural traditions, featuring a vibrant orange box with marigold-themed interior designs. The auction lot also includes custom artwork by illustrator Alfredo Rios, known for his depictions of nature and Mexican folklore.

All proceeds from the auction will be donated to Esperanza International, an organization supporting housing construction and community development in Mexico. Jonny Fowle, Sotheby's Head of Whisky & Spirits for North America and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, stated that this whisky combines exceptional craftsmanship, exquisite artistry, and a strong charitable purpose. Sotheby's is delighted to partner with Macallan again to offer collectors this unique opportunity.

This Mexico edition is the third release in the Distil Your World series, following London and New York editions, each aiming to capture the essence of these global cultural capitals through whisky craftsmanship.
