The Macallan Unveils New Distil Your World Edition Inspired by Hong Kong's Vibrant Spirit
The Macallan has launched the newest installment of its highly praised Distil Your World series, drawing inspiration from the vibrant energy of Hong Kong to create a fourth limited-edition whisky. This new offering comes with a short film named 'Reimagining Spaces,' which honors the city's distinctive character as it continually reinvents itself between tradition and modernity.
The Macallan's Master Whisky Maker, Euan Kennedy, collaborated with the Roca brothers, the masterminds behind the twice-awarded 'World's Best Restaurant,' El Celler de Can Roca, to embark on a sensory journey capturing the essence of Hong Kong. Kennedy shared that the whisky's inspiration stemmed from his explorations of Hong Kong with Joan Roca. The whisky is bold and robust, with a structure mirroring Hong Kong's architectural landscape stretching from sea level to green peaks, offering layers as rich and contrasting as the city itself, revealing new stories with each sip.
This naturally dark single malt whisky is matured in European oak sherry casks, showcasing flavors reminiscent of ginger and cinnamon—common spices found in Hong Kong's bustling markets. The aroma features rich resinous sweetness and spicy ginger, complemented by notes of honey, antique oak, and tropical fruits akin to Hong Kong-style egg tarts. The palate is full and viscous, blending bright tropical sweetness with rounded spices, while the finish highlights vibrant antique oak.
The Roca brothers crafted a modern menu reflecting Hong Kong's cultural diversity, featuring dim sum appetizers, specialty tea blends, rose shrimp dumplings, scallop and sea urchin rice rolls, and truffle-infused char siu bao. The main course draws inspiration from Temple Street Night Market's sweet-and-sour vegetables and abalone shrimp roe mousse, paired with a unique duck milk tea mooncake.
