Loch Lomond Unveils Waypoint 31YO Peated Single Malt

Waypoint Series Release 3 Distilled in Straight-Neck Stills and Finished in Port Casks

Scotch whisky brand Loch Lomond has announced the launch of Loch Lomond Waypoint 31 Year Old, the third release in its limited-edition Waypoint Series. Distilled in 1992 and bottled at 44.1% ABV, this expression is the distillery's oldest peated single malt whisky to date, limited to just 2,600 bottles worldwide.

Straight-Neck Distillation and Dual-Cask Maturation

Loch Lomond Waypoint 31 Year Old was distilled using the distillery's signature straight-neck stills. After distillation, the spirit was initially matured in ex-bourbon casks before being transferred to Tawny Port casks for a 12-month finishing period. The straight-neck distillation craft paired with dual-cask maturation defines the architectural profile of this aged peated whisky.

Regarding its flavour profile, distillery tasting notes describe aromas of sweet blackberry and honey. On the palate, notes of rich dark chocolate, raspberry, and cedarwood unfold to create layers of balanced complexity.

Paying Homage to the Natural Landscapes of the West Highland Way

The design concept of the Waypoint Series is inspired by the captivating natural landscapes around Loch Lomond. This third chapter focuses on the West Highland Way hiking route, specifically the stretch along Loch Lomond's northeastern shore from Inversnaid to Inverarnan. The whisky is presented in an engraved handcrafted wooden box featuring copper detailing and bespoke artwork by illustrator Brett Breckon, depicting the trail's lochside scenery, landmarks, native wildlife, distillery heritage, and distinctive tasting elements.

Loch Lomond Master Blender Michael Henry noted that each mile from Inversnaid to Inverarnan becomes increasingly challenging, yet brings a deeper sense of achievement. He shared that this trail weaves through Scotland's most dramatic natural vistas, inspiring people to explore the wonders around them—a spirit of exploration that lies at the core of their single malt whisky making. The Waypoint Series pays tribute to Loch Lomond itself, capturing the local terroir and cultural narratives through fine whisky.
