Kilchoman Launches First Maury Fortified Wine Cask Whisky

A Grand Encounter of Peat Smoke and French Sweet Wine: Kilchoman Explores Roussillon Cask Craftsmanship

Located on the Isle of Islay, the family-run distillery Kilchoman recently announced the launch of a new limited-edition Single Malt Whisky, marking the distillery's first use of Maury fortified wine casks from the Roussillon region of France for full maturation. This release reflects the distillery's bold experimentation in cask selection, perfectly combining signature peat smoke with the sweet flavors of fortified wine to offer whisky enthusiasts a refreshing sensory experience.

Depth in Rare Maury Casks

Maury is a sweet fortified wine produced in the Roussillon region of southern France, primarily made from Grenache Noir grapes. This red grape variety is known for imparting rich aromas of cherry, fig, and white pepper. Kilchoman founder Anthony Wills stated that while Maury casks are extremely difficult to manage and rare on the market, when handled correctly, they produce a uniquely charming style. This whisky displays a captivating deep red-ochre hue, the result of long-term full maturation in powerful fortified wine casks.

Layered Flavor Performance at 50% ABV

In terms of flavor, this limited edition bottled at 50% ABV offers distinct layers. On the nose, the figs, raisins, and red dates from the Maury casks are prominent, accompanied by salted caramel, orange peel, and a hint of peat smoke. The palate reveals rich complexity, including pipe tobacco, dark chocolate, molasses, and spicy notes of various seasonings, finishing with dried fruits and cocoa. This bold yet balanced recipe demonstrates the distillery's success in harmonizing intense fruitiness with its core peaty style.

A Major Milestone for the Brand's 20th Anniversary

Founded in 2005 and family-operated, Kilchoman officially reached its 20th-anniversary milestone last year. To celebrate, the distillery has released a series of limited anniversary editions, including the representative 20th Anniversary Series and a historically significant 20-Year-Old Single Malt matured in the distillery's very first casks. Furthermore, last year saw the re-release of the Machir Bay Cask Strength version after a three-year hiatus, continuing to expand its diverse flavor portfolio and exquisite craftsmanship.
