Jack Daniel's Releases Syrup Barrel Finished Rye Whiskey

Jack Daniel’s has announced Distillery Series #16, a limited-edition Barrel Proof Tennessee Rye Whiskey distinguished by its secondary maturation in barrels previously holding table syrup. This experimental whiskey uses a mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley. After initial aging in new charred oak barrels, the spirit was transferred into casks that once held Southern-style table syrup for finishing. Byron Copeland, Jack Daniel’s Barrel Maturation Manager and Master Taster, stated that the Distillery Series aims to explore new concepts, and the complex nature of Tennessee Rye Whiskey provides an excellent canvas for such experiments.

The table syrup barrel finish adds a rich layer of sweetness to the whiskey's inherent natural rye spice. Copeland emphasized that the barrel treatment imparts a unique and irreplaceable Jack Daniel’s style of sweetness and depth to the final product. Official brand tasting notes describe flavors of salted caramel upon entry, underlaid by a warm rye spice. The sweetness and depth derived from the syrup-soaked barrels do not overshadow the whiskey's inherent complexity. Distillery Series #16 is bottled at 111.4 Proof (55.7% ABV) in 375ml bottles.

This release coincides with the annual Jack Daniel’s Barrel Tree lighting ceremony on December 6th. The Distillery Series exemplifies Jack Daniel’s ongoing spirit of innovation and experimentation within the Tennessee Whiskey category. Past releases have explored various finishing techniques and barrel treatments, establishing the series as a platform for the distillery's creative expressions. Recently, the Tennessee whiskey industry has shown increasing interest in experimental products, with producers utilizing alternative barrel finishes to create unique flavor profiles and attract whiskey enthusiasts seeking new experiences.
