Distilled in 1987 and matured for an impressive 39 years in a single refill sherry butt, the whisky is bottled at a natural cask strength of 51.4% ABV, strictly limited to just 451 bottles worldwide. As the very last Talisker cask in Gordon & MacPhail's legendary inventory, it sold out across the UK market almost immediately upon release.
Aroma and Palate Tasting Notes
On the nose, the dram reveals an opulent sherry cask influence. The glass offers sweet layers of rum-raisin fudge, melted milk chocolate, and hazelnut spread, balanced by vibrant tropical notes of mango, pineapple, and fresh green apple. Over nearly four decades of wood maturation, the aggressive peat smoke has softened into an elegant, delicate whisper in the background.
The palate immediately delivers the unmistakable signature of Talisker, brimming with cracked black pepper, savory cured meat, and bold spices. It opens with rich notes reminiscent of slow-cooked beef brisket, brine, and pickles, before giving way to succulent orange marmalade and gentle chocolate sweetness. Talisker's quintessential chili pepper heat and maritime pepper smoke surge forward with remarkable power. With time, nuances of pine resin, mint, and coriander seed emerge across a viscous, coating mouthfeel.
Independent bottlings of Talisker are exceptionally rare, and single casks of such mature age are virtually unheard of. While recent core distillery bottlings have seen divided opinions, reviewers emphasized that this extraordinary aged single malt stands as a magnificent tribute to the distillery's greatness, awarding it a near-perfect score of 9 out of 10.
