Duncan Taylor to Expand Octave Whisky Series Production

Inventory Directly Doubled! Independent Bottler Duncan Taylor Expands Ultimate Cask Finish Production

Renowned Scotch whisky independent bottler Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky recently announced a major expansion of its Octave whisky series this year in response to growing market demand. Nearly 1,000 new Octave expressions are expected to hit the market, directly doubling the company's existing inventory and offering whisky enthusiasts a more diverse range of choices.

In this series expansion, alongside traditional Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry cask finishes, several brand-new cask types will debut this year, including Jamaican rum, port, and Madeira wine casks. These innovative attempts mark an important evolution in the Octave product line, demonstrating the distillery's ambition and flexibility in flavor exploration.

The Secondary Maturation Craft of Small Oak Casks

The name Octave derives from the Latin word octavus, meaning "one-eighth". These 64-liter small oak casks have about one-eighth the capacity of a traditional sherry butt, typically holding around 85 to 90 bottles of whisky. Duncan Taylor foresaw the market opportunity and registered the name over a decade ago, and today the series has successfully marketed itself in over fifty countries and regions worldwide.

This unique cask finish maturation technique stems from the 1970s, when such small casks were primarily used to train coopers in making large sherry casks and were not favored for whisky maturation. However, through continuous experimentation, the distillery discovered that smaller oak casks provide an accelerated secondary maturation effect. Due to the high ratio of wood surface area to liquid volume, these oak casks impart a richer character to the whisky, gently enhancing flavor complexity while perfectly preserving the unique style of the original distillery.

Veteran Team Leads Flavor Breakthroughs

Commenting on the news, Senior Spirits Manager Ian Logan stated that the continued success of the Octave series has allowed them to push boundaries by experimenting with brand-new oak cask finishing techniques. Leveraging their vast whisky reserves, they remain dedicated to adding an extra layer of complexity to the spirit while preserving the original character of each distillery. Duncan Taylor is renowned for holding one of the world's largest private collections of rare and vintage whiskies. Operating as a whisky merchant, blender, independent bottler, and cask broker, its Octave Premium Strathclyde was previously crowned World's Best Single Cask Single Grain Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards.
