Diageo pauses Special Releases; 2026 edition cancelled

2026 Special Releases cancelled: series history and group restructuring context

Diageo has immediately paused its annual Special Releases series, and the 2026 edition has also been cancelled. The series is usually announced in October or November, but consumers will not see a new batch of bottlings this year; Diageo confirmed to The Spirits Business that the group has paused this year's Special Releases series.

Series history and bottling schedule

Special Releases has been part of Diageo’s whisky lineup since 2001, positioned from launch as rare, cask-strength, collectible bottlings. The first edition had only three releases, including the first Port Ellen version; the following year it grew to seven, introducing Brora for the first time.

From 2003 to 2017, the series included nine to eleven bottlings each year, and every year featured single malts from the then-closed Port Ellen and Brora distilleries. After Diageo announced plans the previous year to reopen the two distilleries, those two whiskies were absent from the 2018 series for the first time. From 2019, the series adopted an annual theme, a fixed set of eight bottlings, and a similar label design; the two most recent editions were 2024’s Spirited Xchange Second Edition and 2025’s Horizons Unbound.

Group restructuring and layoffs background

Regarding this decision, Diageo said it wanted to take time to review feedback and ensure that products launched in the future can meet the current needs of consumers and customers. The year-long pause comes as the group restructures under CEO Dave Lewis.

Since last year, Diageo has committed to cutting 2,000 roles across the business, including 150 in Ireland and 305 in North America; the group also closed the Aviation Gin visitor centre in July. In August, GMB Scotland accused the group of refusing to communicate with workers and of failing to mitigate the impact of layoffs at Scottish distilleries. Earlier this month, the strike by workers at Cameronbridge Distillery was suspended.
