Diageo's 2025 Special Releases Explore Uncharted Flavors with 'Horizons Unbound'
Whisky giant Diageo has grandly launched its 2025 Special Releases collection, 'Horizons Unbound'. This collection comprises eight single malt Scotch whiskies, all of which undergo secondary maturation in unconventional oak casks. These include casks toasted with volcanic rock and others that previously held Mezcal.
The 'Horizons Unbound' series is designed to break away from traditional whisky-making methods. Through experimental flavor treatments, it aims to inject unexpected taste experiences into familiar spirits. Diageo's Master Blender, Dr. Stuart Morrison, meticulously curated this series to appeal to collectors seeking innovation, while also satisfying everyday drinkers who appreciate unique sensory experiences.
Among the distinct offerings, the Talisker 14 Year Old ‘Molten Seas’ stands out. This marks the Isle of Skye distillery's first attempt at maturing whisky in American oak casks toasted with volcanic rock a development Diageo describes as an innovative experiment in flavor development. Another expression, The Singleton of Glen Ord 17 Year Old ‘Into the Blue’, combines secondary maturation in ex-Mezcal casks with refill sherry casks. Official tasting notes suggest this imparts rich spice flavors and opulent fruitiness.
Other releases include Lagavulin 12 Year Old ‘Grain & Embers’, boasting roasted smoky notes from Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks, and Oban 12 Year Old ‘Heart of the Harbour’. The latter, aged in ex-bourbon American oak casks, exudes notes of toffee, citrus, and sea breeze.
Furthermore, Dailuaine 21 Year Old ‘Marbled Treasures’ is a unique, one-off release from the distillery, matured in Spanish ex-sherry casks. Official flavor notes describe layers of dried fruit, baked apple, and fragrant spices. Clynelish 18 Year Old ‘Waxen Sun’ utilizes an early distillation 'Pineapple Cut' process to create tropical fruit and waxy characteristics. Roseisle 14 Year Old ‘Harmonic Grace’ blends refill and rejuvenated casks to add complexity.
Teaninich 8 Year Old ‘Daring Rye’ is also a distillery first and belongs to an unusual category. This single grain Scotch whisky is made with rye and Teaninich's unique mash filter and matured in ex-bourbon casks. Official flavor notes highlight toffee sweetness accompanied by depth of spice and herbaceousness.
