A Stunning Transformation: Reviving the West Coast Distilling Tradition

The design firm Organic Architects has formally submitted a planning application to transform the former abandoned oil depot at Ardrishaig Pier on Scotland's west coast into the brand-new Ardrishaig Distillery. This project is more than just a working distillery; it is designed as a visitor destination featuring an atrium, tasting rooms, and a viewing terrace, aiming to breathe new life into land that has been derelict and contaminated for years.

Heritage and Design: Connecting Sea and Craft

The significance of this plan lies in bringing whisky production back to the village of Ardrishaig. The area was once home to the Glenfyne Distillery, but local distilling traditions have been dormant since it closed in 1937. Bari Reid, Director at Organic Architects, noted that the design draws inspiration from the local maritime heritage and distilling history, showcasing production details through large windows and featuring a glass-walled garden building facing Loch Gilp.

Strategic Location: Gateway to Whisky Legends

The distillery’s location offers a strategic advantage, situated near the Crinan Canal and on the main route to the famous Islay and Campbeltown whisky regions. Founder John Moore stated that the goal is to create a brand the community can be proud of, conveying a passion for craft detail through design. If approved by Argyll and Bute Council, the development is expected to create new jobs and boost the local economy. A final decision on the application is expected later this year.
