Angus Dundee Marks First Filling at New Chinese Distillery

Blending Scotch Heritage with Jiangnan Aesthetics: A New Chapter at Qiandao Lake

Angus Dundee Distillers, owners of the Tomintoul and Glencadam distilleries in Scotland, recently reached a major milestone at their first malt whisky distillery in Chun’an, China: the official filling of the first casks with new-make spirit. This marks the transition from construction to active production at the Chun’an Malt Whisky Distillery, which overlooks the picturesque Qiandao Lake (Thousand Island Lake). The distillery aims to integrate traditional Scotch whisky production methods with the unique local natural environment and cultural heritage.

Unique Architecture Meeting Nature

Iain Lochhead, Director at Angus Dundee Distillers, stated that the Chun’an distillery represents a unique opportunity to combine Scotland’s whisky heritage with China’s inspiring natural landscape. The distillery’s design reflects the aesthetic of local Jiangnan Huizhou-style architecture, with every element crafted with precision and care.

As a strategic investment for Angus Dundee Distillers in China, the Chun’an distillery draws deeply from the group’s Scotch whisky expertise, continuing two centuries of traditional whisky-making philosophy. The site employs authentic single malt whisky production methods, including traditional copper stills, strict yeast management, precise cut points, and a diverse cask maturation program.

Building a Global Whisky Destination

The first spirit-filling ceremony was held in the presence of directors and special guests, symbolizing the start of the long maturation journey. The event featured a farm-to-table lunch inspired by the surrounding mountains and local terroir. Spanning over 20 acres, the Chun’an distillery will evolve into a full-scale whisky destination, with a visitor experience area set to open in mid-2026.

Once open, visitors will be able to explore immersive production galleries, tasting rooms, dining areas, retail shops, and outdoor event spaces. Iain Lochhead added that this first filling is a defining moment for their Chinese operations, and the company is proud to bring its expertise to such a high-potential market, dedicated to creating a world-class distillery and visitor experience.

This move by Angus Dundee Distillers continues their mission to promote authentic single malt whisky, demonstrating how Scottish expertise can evolve in new terroirs while establishing Qiandao Lake as a future global hub for whisky appreciation.
