Valdespino Legend of Cuban Rum Pre-1962 is a rare historical release drawn from a private solera of old Cuban Rum retained in the Valdespino bodega’s reserves and subsequently released after the Estevez family acquired the house in 1999. The rum is reported to have been distilled from molasses in Cuba during the 1940s and 1950s, before the Cuban Revolution and the nationalisation of the country’s rum industry. After distillation, it was shipped to Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, where it was retained and matured in oak casks previously used for ageing Oloroso Sherry; younger aged rums were reportedly introduced over time under Valdespino’s traditional solera system. The exact bottling date of this bottle is undocumented; it is a post-1999 Valdespino/Estevez release, imported into Japan.

Online tasting note for reference:
Nose: Old and antique Cuban character with honeyed tropical fruit (mango), roasted coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of tobacco; notes of cane sugar, floral tones, oak, and a touch of sulphur, with some red grape and sherry influence.
Palate: Sweet, oily and creamy with dried apricot, milk chocolate, brown sugar and roasted almond; light grassiness and cane juice, caramel, a mild rubbery/sulphury note, and oaky tannins, showing sherry‑cask influence and a slightly bitter astringency.
Finish: Relatively short to medium but very expressive, with waves of grapes, sherry, vanilla, coffee, toasted caramel and toffee‑like sticky sweetness; smoky, lightly tannic, with lingering sulphury bitterness and a touch of acidity.
