The legend of Nikka Whisky began in 1934 when Masataka Taketsuru founded the company in Yoichi, Hokkaido. Having traveled to Scotland to learn authentic whisky-making techniques, Taketsuru-san was dedicated to creating real Japanese whisky in a climate most similar to Scotland. He insisted on using direct coal-fired distillation, giving the spirit a powerful and smoky soul.

As the business grew, Nikka established the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai. Unlike the strong character of Yoichi, Miyagikyo is located at a river junction with a humid climate and uses steam distillation, producing a softer spirit with rich floral and fruity notes. The perfect blend of whiskies from these two distinct distilleries is the secret behind why Nikka 12 Years Old remains a classic. Every drop represents Nikka's highest respect for time, climate, and the art of blending.
