The legend of Nikka Whisky began in 1934, founded by Masataka Taketsuru in Yoichi, Hokkaido. Mr. Taketsuru traveled to Scotland to learn authentic whisky-making techniques and returned to Japan to build a distillery in Yoichi, where the climate and environment most closely resembled Scotland. He insisted on using direct coal-fired distillation, giving the spirit a powerful and smoky soul.
As the company grew, Nikka established the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai. Unlike the strong personality of Yoichi, Miyagikyo is located at the confluence of rivers with a humid climate and uses steam distillation, producing a softer spirit rich in floral and fruity notes. The perfect blend of whiskies from these two major distilleries is the core secret behind the enduring success of Nikka 12 Years Old. Every drop represents Nikka's highest respect for time, climate, and the art of blending.
