Miyagikyo 12 Years Old - The Sendai Gem Blooming with Elegant Floral Notes

Miyagikyo 12 Years Old Single Malt Whisky is the most iconic age statement expression from Nikka's Miyagikyo Distillery. Compared to the robust smokiness of Yoichi, Miyagikyo is known for its silky texture and refined fruity aroma. As Japanese age-statement whiskies become increasingly scarce, this discontinued 12-Year-Old version has become a highly valuable collector's item on the market.

Product Details

Miyagikyo 12 Years Old utilizes the Miyagikyo Distillery's unique steam heating technology for distillation. Compared to Yoichi's direct coal-fired heating, this method better preserves the raw spirit's floral, fruity notes and delicate character. This whisky is matured in sherry casks, which impart profound layers and a warm spice sensation to the liquid. For enthusiasts who appreciate balanced aesthetics and the elegant finesse of Japanese whisky, this is an unmissable masterpiece.

Read More About the Brand

The establishment of the Miyagikyo Distillery was the most important vision late in the life of Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky. After successfully establishing the Yoichi Distillery, Taketsuru aimed to create a whisky fundamentally different from Yoichi—one possessing a more elegant character. In 1969, he selected a site in Miyagi Prefecture on the outskirts of Sendai City, surrounded by two clear rivers, the Hirose and Nikkawa, where the humidity and climate closely resembled the Scottish Highlands.

The key to Miyagikyo lies in its distillation process. It uses large pot stills with narrow necks and employs the 'indirect steam heating' method. This precise temperature control allows the raw spirit to retain more volatile floral and fruity aromas, rather than developing heavy char or smoky notes. Miyagikyo 12 Years Old was born in this environment, representing Taketsuru's pursuit of 'balance.'

However, due to the global Japanese whisky boom that erupted in the 2010s, Nikka faced a severe shortage of aged raw spirits. In 2015, Nikka announced the discontinuation of all age statement whiskies, including Miyagikyo 10, 12, and 15 Years Old, as well as the Yoichi age statement series. This decision instantly turned Miyagikyo 12 Years Old into a discontinued collector's item. For whisky enthusiasts, this bottle is not just a taste experience but a testament to that glorious chapter in Japanese whisky history. Its soft palate and rich dried fruit layers remain the benchmark for the 'Elegant Style' in the Japanese whisky market today.
