Product Details
Miyagikyo 12 Years Old is distilled using unique steam-heating technology at the Miyagikyo Distillery. Unlike the direct coal-firing used at Yoichi, this method preserves the delicate floral and fruity characteristics of the spirit. Matured in sherry casks, this whisky offers deep layers and a warm, spicy undertone. It is a masterpiece for those seeking the balance and elegant heritage of Japanese whisky.

The establishment of the Miyagikyo Distillery was the most significant vision of Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru in his later years. Following the success of Yoichi, he aimed to create a whisky with a completely different, more elegant profile. In 1969, he chose a site in Miyagi Prefecture near Sendai, surrounded by the Hirose and Nikkawa rivers, where the humidity and climate closely resemble the Scottish Highlands.
The key to Miyagikyo lies in its distillation process. The distillery utilizes large, slender pot stills and 'indirect steam heating.' This precise temperature control allows the spirit to retain more volatile floral and fruity aromas rather than developing heavy charred or smoky notes. Miyagikyo 12 Years Old was born from this environment, representing Taketsuru's pursuit of 'balance.'
However, due to the global boom in Japanese whisky during the 2010s, Nikka faced severe shortages of aged stocks. In 2015, Nikka announced the discontinuation of all age-statement whiskies, including the Miyagikyo 10, 12, and 15 Years Old. This decision instantly turned the 12-year-old expression into a legendary rarity. For enthusiasts, this bottle is not just a sensory delight but a witness to the golden era of Japanese whisky.
