In 1819, George Granville Leveson-Gower (1758–1833) founded the original Clynelish distillery. At the time, he held the title of 2nd Marquess of Stafford, and in 1833, he was created the 1st Duke of Sutherland. The use of "Granville" by independent bottlers as a code name for Clynelish is derived from his middle name.
