In 1819, George Granville Leveson-Gower (1758–1833) founded the original Clynelish distillery. At the time, his title was the 2nd Marquess of Stafford, later becoming the 1st Duke of Sutherland in 1833. The independent bottler uses 'Granville' as the code name for Clynelish, derived from his middle name.
