Kilkerran is not the name of the distillery; its soul belongs to Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown. The distillery's history dates back to 1872, founded by William Mitchell, but was forced to close in 1925 due to the Great Depression. After nearly 80 years of silence, it was repurchased and revived in 2004 by J&A Mitchell (the family that owns Springbank Distillery).
The name Kilkerran was chosen because the Glengyle trademark had already been registered by another company. Kilkerran is derived from the Gaelic 'Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain,' meaning 'Head of the loch of Saint Kieran's cell,' the ancient name for Campbeltown's original settlement. Kilkerran adheres to 'small volume, high quality' production. Its distillation cycles alternate with Springbank, sharing the same technical team and dedication. This 12-year-old whisky exhibits the typical Campbeltown character: slight peaty smoke, rich oily texture, and that unforgettable sea-breeze salinity, making it a masterpiece that pays tribute to the region's illustrious history.
