Read More About the Brand
The history of Clynelish (pronounced: Klay-ne-lish) dates back to 1819, founded by the Duke of Sutherland. Located in the northern Highland village of Brora, the distillery's iconic label features a Highland Wildcat, which is not only the distillery's emblem but also the coat of arms of the Duke of Sutherland's family.
Clynelish is globally known for its unique 'waxy' texture, a special mouthfeel that is no accident. During the whisky distillation process, Clynelish deliberately retains the sediments in the Low Wines Receiver. It is believed that these oil-rich substances create the smooth, waxy characteristic of Clynelish, which is difficult to replicate. Even during modernization and renovation, the distillery management mandated that the production process must remain unchanged to protect this valuable flavour legacy.
For a long time, the majority of the spirit produced by Clynelish has been used as a core component in the Johnnie Walker series (especially the Gold Label). Consequently, Official Bottling (OB) single malt expressions are relatively rare. The Clynelish 14 Years Old stands as the cornerstone of its core range, showcasing the pure pedigree of Highland whisky—possessing both inland sweetness and a hint of the maritime salinity typical of the northern coast, making it widely regarded as one of the most complex whiskies from the region.
