Online tasting note for reference:
Nose: Light smoke, ginger in syrup and wood spices then sweetness from thick and unctuous dates and burnt brown sugar. Dark red fruit, marmalade and salted dark chocolate develop, with treacle toffee, game meat and oily walnut. Dusty apples and then a huge lick of liquorice emerge. Rich and complex with oak, cocoa, juicy black cherries and toasted oats. A big Madeira job this. Leathery, fruity & meaty, all vibrantly ‘glossed’ together.
Palate: Roast chestnuts, mince pie fruitiness and hickory, then dark berries, cigar box and softly smouldering peat. Tart citrus, cracked black pepper and a hint of cough syrup are present as well, with a touch of malt loaf, dried mushrooms and bitter dark chocolate. Smooth toffee notes to start followed by tropical fruits and warming cinnamon. ‘Boing’ at first. Nutty with Christmas cake spice and dried fruit notes along with yet more peat and a touch of botanical bitterness.
Finish: Oak char, dried fruit and a little oak char linger in a full-bodied finish. A dry finish with more oaty flavours coming through. There’s also a final hint of burnt rubber. More ‘boing’ and burned pickled onions, but the rubberiness subsides as time passes.
