anCnoc originates from the Knockdhu Distillery in Aberdeenshire, Scottish Highlands. Although the distillery's name means 'Black Hill' in Gaelic, their single malt bottling has been branded as anCnoc ('The Hill') since 1994 to avoid confusion with another brand, Knockando.

Founded in 1894 by John Morrison, the Knockdhu Distillery maintains traditional methods. This 12 Year Old is considered the core soul of the brand, embodying a 'modern vintage' style. The distillery utilizes two traditional onion-shaped stills and, notably, worm tub condensers—a rare cooling method that imparts a unique, fuller texture to the spirit without sacrificing the characteristic Highland lightness.
